Orchestra
Here at Papatoetoe East Primary, we are fortunate to have been associated with the Tironui Trust since 2008. The Tironui Trust was established to promote formal education in music with particular emphasis on involvement in low decile primary schools. As of 2024, Papatoetoe East Primary will play a prominent part in helping to develop string musicians (cello, viola & viola) from Year 3 through to Year 13.
All our Year 3 students will, for 2 terms, develop musicianship skills in classroom programmes run by The Tironui Trust. Students in Year 4 and 5 will then be selected to participate in weekly lessons for cello, violin and viola. These students are provided with free violins, violas, cellos for their lessons. As well as learning the basics of reading music and playing an orchestral instrument, they are able to experience the joy of performing as a group.
High performing students at Papatoetoe East Primary will now have an opportunity to become a Tironui Trust Scholar. These students will have their music learning costs covered through Primary, Intermediate and High School.
As part of our involvement with the Tironui Trust, our students have worked alongside members of the APO and NZSQ. Our Orchestra has also joined other Tironui Trust members in concerts at the Vodafone Events Centre.
