Cohort Entry

Cohort Entry

Papatoetoe East School has cohort entry for students who are new to school.  This means that we start our Year 0/1 students at two points each term; the Monday of Week 1 and Week 6. If Monday is a public holiday, then students start the following day.  Students must have turned five before they can legally start school.  Please be aware that enrolments can be completed any time before they turn 5 but must be completed fully before their first day.  If your child has already been enrolled at a previous school they are able to start any time once an enrolment has been completed.

Cohort entry is about helping children to settle better in school. There is evidence that starting school alongside other children helps children build relationships and supports a smoother entry to school life.  At Papatoetoe East we run a Ready for School Programme.  More information about this can be found below.

Ready For School Programme

Ready For School Programme

Starting school is a very special time for whānau, sometimes an emotional time.  While some students are confident and eager to start school others may be a little unsure.  Everyone has a very different journey and it is important that we work together to ensure that this time is positive for everyone involved.

To help support your child to successfully transition into our school they will start their journey as part of our Ready for School Programme. This programme consists of cohorts twice a term where students will start either in Week 1 or Week 6 of each term. This allows for groups to transition together and enables students to adjust to our school environment gradually in a supportive way.

Your child will work alongside an experienced and dedicated teacher who will support your child to develop some of the social, emotional and physical skills necessary to flourish successfully in a more structured Year 0/1 classroom. Most students will be part of the programme for 5 weeks however, there may be some students who require a little more time. This will be individualised to best meet your child's needs. The week prior to your child transitioning they will have visits to their new classroom and opportunities to meet their new teacher and some of the class members.

As well as transitioning your child our Ready for School Programme also supports parents and whānau during this time. This includes whānau spending some time at school with their child, meeting key school staff, having a tour of our school and learning about how to support your child's development both at school and at home.   This may include areas such as how to support positive home reading or get your child into routines at home that mean that help everyone and ensure your child arrives at school ready to learn.

Additional Information

Additional Information

School lunches
Papatoetoe East Primary School is part of the Ministry of Education Ka Ora, Ka Ako - Healthy School Lunches Programme. Our lunch providers, Good Vibes and Subway, ensure all students receive appropriate healthy meals that meet all dietary requirements, including but not limited to vegetarian, vegan, halal, dairy free and gluten free meals. Any families that choose to opt out of this programme are expected to provide a healthy alternative, not ‘fast’ foods, sweets, lollies or chips.

We are also a water-only school. No other drinks are allowed to be brought to school. This includes energy drinks, fizzy drinks or boxed drinks (Up and Go, juices etc)

Due to the number of pupils with food allergies and associated food intolerances we discourage the sharing of food except when organised and monitored as part of a school event.

Uniform

At Papatoetoe East Primary School we have a uniform that every child is expected to wear correctly.  Our uniform can be purchased from:

The Uniform Shoppe, 1 Ronwood Ave, Manukau

Angels Fashion, 98 St George Street, Old Papatoetoe.

If for some reason our school uniform is not able to be worn, an explanation note is required and must be sighted and signed by a classroom teacher. Lost clothing is always a problem.  Parents are asked to name all parts of their child's uniform clearly.  Our school lost property box is kept inside the foyer of the van Wijk room and you are welcome to search through this if something has been lost.

Stationery

Specific stationery is required to support classroom programmes and learning.  Stationery packs can be purchased from our school office for all students.  These packs are organised according to the needs of students and contain a complete set of books as well as additional stationery items.  If your child is joining us and has stationery from a previous school, we ask that you bring it in and we will use that rather than ask you to purchase another pack from us.

Arriving / Leaving school

We have two school entrances.  Our main entrance is on Tui Road and the other is Cornwall Road.  Cornwall Road is locked during the day and only accessible before and after school.

By law, all pupils are expected to attend school for the official school hours.  These are 8.50am, through to 3.00pm.  Parents are expected to schedule out of school activities and transport arrangements for their children around these times.  Children leaving before 3.00pm must be signed out at the school office.  We recommend that students arrive at school between 8.20am and 8.40am so that they have time to settle in and say hello to their teacher and friends.

We take student safety very seriously.  Please discuss and regularly remind your child about safety as they travel to and from school.   It is important that everyone knows how they are getting home and if they are being collected, who it is, and where to meet them.

Here are some reminders about being safe:

  • Everyone MUST use the pedestrian crossing at all times
  • The school driveway is closed for parent traffic before and after school
  • If your child is late to school they must report to the office where they will be given a late note for their teacher.

Suggestions for new pupils and parents

  • Clearly name your children's uniform, hats, bags, lunch boxes, drink containers etc.
  • Send any money for school in an envelope with your child's name and room clearly recorded on the outside.
  • Talk to your child about their day at school.  Ask questions.  Be interested and involved in your child's learning and their school day.
  • All parents and other visitors to the school must report to the office.
  • Keep in contact with your child’s teacher.  They are here to help.
