At Papatoetoe East Primary we have been fortunate to have been associated with the Tironui Trust since 2008. The Tironui Trust was established to promote formal education in music with particular emphasis on involvement in low decile primary schools. Our students are now offered a three year instrumental music programme.
Six Papatoetoe primary schools are currently enrolled in the programme. Wind instruments are taught to selected Year 5 and 6 pupils at Papatoetoe West, Puhinui and Papatoetoe North Schools, and string instruments to Year 4 to 6 pupils at Papatoetoe East, South and Central Schools. Most children move on to Papatoetoe Intermediate where they continue the Tironui programme for Years 7 and 8.
The String Orchestra members in Years 4, 5, and 6 are provided with free violins, violas, cellos and double basses for each year level group. The Tironui Trust provides music teachers to support our students with weekly lessons. As well as learning the basics of reading music and playing an orchestral instrument, they are able to experience the joy of performing as a group. As part of our involvement with the Tironui Trust, our students have worked alongside members of the APO and NZSQ. Our Orchestra has also joined other Tironui Trust members in concerts at the Vodafone Events Centre.
